makes one travel size toy wallet approximately 6″ wide x 7″ high. this version was made using Cloud9 Fabrics‘ Steps | Blueberry organic canvas (left over from the nature explorer bags) and organic cotton/organic linen blend poplin, with plastic material from a broken zip wallet and sewn together using organic cotton sewing thread. I made this wallet to store our Read Write Inc. Speed Sound Cards (Set 1), ready for our trip to visit grandparents.
cut 1 piece of home decor weight canvas and 1 piece of lining fabric 7″(width) x 14.5 (height) ” and 1 piece of vinyl or similar scrap plastic 5.5″ x 4″. 1 piece of canvas for strap measuring 2″ x 4.5″.
fold strap piece in half, wrong sides facing, then fold raw edges inside to meet the middle. top stitch along both edges of the strap.
on reverse of canvas, mark out a square that is 4.5″ x 3″ centred from raw edges and 1.5″ from the top edge. mark a centre line and a line 1/2″ from the top and bottom and line from all four corners to the centre. sew around square.
cut along centre line and angles from corners, trim larger sides to 1/2″
press fabric to the reverse side. repeat for lining fabric.
sandwich vinyl/scrap plastic between the canvas and lining fabric and top stitch close to edge and a parallel line of stitching 1/4″ away.
fold horizontal raw edges of lining fabric under by 1/4″ and press (avoid the vinyl/plastic). attach velcro to the right side of the top edges of the lining fabric.
fold strap, matching raw edges and aligning raw edges of the strap with the raw edge of the right hand side of top of canvas, baste in place, 2″ from top. fold the canvas in half horizontally, right sides facing. sew the two edges using 1/2″ seam allowance. repeat for lining fabric (minus the strap). trim seam allowances to 1/4″.
turn bag right side out, fold under top edges by 1/4″ and top stitch around edges.
